Barbados is one of the gems of the Caribbean, and island nation that is packed full of stunning beaches, excellent attractions and plenty of opportunities for relaxing in the sun on a romantic break. If you are planning a stay in a luxury hotel, Caribbean destinations don’t get much better than Barbados. Here is an overview of the country, including things to see and do, to help you plan your luxury break.

Getting Around

Getting around is easy when you visit Barbados and stay a luxury hotel. Caribbean islands can sometimes be challenging to get around, but the roads here are generally good. You can get around the towns and travel between most places on the public buses, which are fast and cheap. However, if you want to visit some of the most remote places, you may need your own transport and should consider hiring a car.

What To Eat

You will eat well in Barbados, which is renowned for its fresh seafood. One of the most popular dishes is flying fish, which is usually breaded and fried, and this is also the symbol of the island. Food tends to be spicy and rich in flavour, and although it is not the most exciting cuisine in the region, you will eat very well.

Plenty of restaurants serve up local dishes like pepper pot (a tasty pork stew), but for the best culinary experience, head to Oistins on Friday evening for the Fish Fry where local fish recipes are cooked up fresh and you can chill out and listen to music long into the night.

Things to See and Do

Accra Beach is the biggest and best in Barbados, so try to pay it a visit during your stay in your luxury hotel. Caribbean beaches are famous the world over, and you won’t be disappointed here. As well as the soft sand and warm, clear water, there are plenty of shops and cafés nearby and you can also walk along the boardwalk for a few kilometres.

Pelican Craft Village is an interesting place to visit to see art by local artists displayed, and you can purchase some if you wish. The Mount Gay Rum Distillery is worth taking a tour, during which you will be able to sample some of the rum for yourself as well as see how it is made. You can also visit Harrison’s Cave, one of the main attractions, and take a tram tour through the cave to see the stalagmites and stalactites.

Scuba diving is popular and there are many operators on the island. The clear waters are some of the best in the whole region. Or, if you don’t dive, you could go on a submarine tour and head 50 metres below the surface to see the shipwrecks and marine life. If you prefer to snorkel, join a catamaran tour and stop off to snorkel with turtles and gaze down at the shipwrecks below the waves.
