West Bengal is the place of many social reformers like Rabindranath Tagore, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and many more. During the independence of India Bengal was divided in two parts, East Bengal and West Bengal. East Bengal was initially merged with Pakistan till 1971. After 1971 East Bengal got the freedom and formed a republic country named Bangladesh. The state remained in India as an extreme part. It is surrounded by Bangladesh in the east, Jharkhand in the west, Bhutan and Sikkim in the north. South is bounded by the Bay of Bengal.

Climate

West Bengal has tropical climate, almost 9 months of summer and 3 months of winter. But in the northeast mountainous region the weather is cold all over the year. The humidity is high enough in comparison to some other states of India. There are six seasons. But only 4 can be observed externally. These seasons are summer, rainy season, early autumn and winter. During the summer average temperature goes over 40 degree centigrade and in some Zillas like Bankura, Purulia the temperature is rise is more than that and most of the times reach the mark of 45 degrees. But during the summer “kal-Baisakhi” or “nor-wester” offers some sort of relief. It is a kind of thunder-storm that is formed due to low atmospheric pressure. These storms are very devastating and cause much damage during the summer during June and July. But in the northeast corner in Darjeeling the weather is beautiful. In the winter heavy fog causes severe damage in these regions.

Rivers

Main rivers of the state are the Ganges, Teesta, Brahmaputra, Damodar, Ajay, Jaldakha, Torsa and many more. Some of these rivers are fed by glaciers and many are poured by rainy water like Damodar, Ajay and so on.

Cuisine

Bengalis or inhabitants of this province are fond of rice and fish curry. But there is no end of dishes for Bengalis. There are several types of sweets are available and among the all “Rasogulla” is world-famous.
