London shines in summer, and there’s plenty of opportunity to get amongst this month. From multiple immersive experiences, to theatre, dinners and beer festivals, here’s the best and most fun things to do in London this August…

1 Notting Hill Carnival 

Back for the first time since the pandemic, London’s ultimate street party will light up west London with dancing, floats and music, oh so much music. Bigger than Glasto, so they say, and with equally colourful outfits and positive vibes, get swept up in the raucous fun and roll along with the day. For families, there’s a stage that’s suitable for those with children in tow.

2 Barbican Open Air Cinema

bask in the Barbicans’ concreate brutalist splendour and catch an art-house flick or documentary at the same time at the Barbican’s open air film screenings. Catch Mothra, about a giant moth of Godzilla proportions on a mission to stand up for her people, Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononokeor Pink Flloyd play live at Pompeii, among others.

3 The Cadogan Arms Summer Series

The King’s Road pub has launched a music series filled with summer time vibes. Opened last year, and recently celebrating it’s first birthday, the pub now hosts live music every Saturday until August Bank Holiday. Enjoy an acoustic session from 9pm, which is then followed up by a DJ playing tunes until late.

4 Great Gatsby Immersive Experience

A London immersive experience before they were everywhere, frock up and party like it’s the roaring 20s, rather than now. Jay Gatsby invites you to enjoy a three course meal and a hedonistic world of red hot rhythms, bootleg liquor and pure jazz age self-indulgence awaits in this fully consuming adaption of F Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal tale.

5 Chinese Food Festival, Bloomsbury

Immerse yourself in Chinese cultures at this three-day culinary shin-dig. Held in the charming Bedford Square Garden, you can feast on an array of food and deink as well as peruse craft markets selling handmade Yunnan craftwork and traditional Han dynasty costumes and Chinese relics. You can also enjoy live folk music and classical dance performances and join in on live action murders mystery games.

6 Summer Showtime, Battersea Power Station

Catch a flick with the breeze in your hair and the Thames at your side at Battersea Power Station. The station’s Cinema in the Arches launch its open air programming of blockbuster, family and indie films this July, running through to August 21. This year, the outdoor cinema is held in the six-acres Power Station Park, so you get a great view of the power station as well. Also, there’s plenty of food and drink on hand for delicious things to munch on during the film.

7 The Halcyon, West End

One of London’s most charming spaces will be transformed into a prohibition era club with a new show, The Halcyon. Presented by The Black Cat Cabaret, The Halcyon will take over Crazy Coqs, housed in the divine Brasserie Zédel, filling the performance venue with golden age jazz and cabaret that features some of West End theatre talent. Dress up, and grab yourself a cocktail.

8 Try a Persian Feast at The Drunken Butler, Farringdon

What once was a Sunday treat, is now the standard fare – the Drunken Butler is now only plating up its Persian feast. The tasting menu takes its ques from the recipes of Chef Patron Yuma Hashemi’s family home to create modern classics that are full of Iranian flavours and made with French techniques. In the restaurant’s homely yet chic dining room tuck into the likes of aubergines, cucumber and rose; and Tahdig – a crispy rice dish served with stews and barbeque saffron chicken.

9 LEGO 90th birthday celebrations, Leicester Square

LEGO’s new look flagships shop reopens following a big refurbishment in time to celebrate the  building block’s 90th anniversary. In honour of the milestone, LEGO is putting on festivities for the whole family to enjoy. There will be 3D builds, interactive LEGO brick, a storytelling table which lets fans get as behind the scenes look at the design process. You can even reimagine yourself in LEGO form.

10 CAMRA Great British Beer Festival, Kensington

Sample tipples from more than 500 breweries as well as ciders, perries, wine and gin. There will also be music to enjoy and food to feast on. Given that the event is put on by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), here’s the place to get stuck into and try out cask ales too.

11 Have Dinner at the London Shell Co, on Regent’s Canal

Take your summer dining up a notch by enjoying a meal as you putter along Regent’s Canal. London Shell Co’s Prince Regent is a cruising restaurant which takes diners past iconic landmarks such as London Zoo and Regent’s Park while diners enjoy seasonal seafood, straight from the Cornish coast. For those of you who don’t like to eat on the move, The Grand Duchess is the sister venue, and moored in Sheldon Square, Paddington.

12 Klimt: The Immersive Experience, Shoreditch

What would London be without a new immersive experience to explore? This one, from the team that brought you the Van Gogh Immersive experience, takes you into the works of Klimt and lets you walk alongside the Austrian artist as you discover the inspiration behind some of his most famous works. There’s also an optional VR component.

13 Stranger Things: The Experience, Brent Cross 

Step into 1986 and the supernatural world of Stranger Things. In another immersive experience for London, get caught up in 80s nostalgia, other-worldly mystery and enduring friendship as you embark on perilous adventure through the darker side of Hawkins and the Upside Down.

14 River Stage, South Bank

River Stage, National Theatre’s Thames-side open air pop-up theatre returns with a free programme of arts and theatre. Each weekend the stage will be taken over by festival partners The Glory, HOME, Hackney Empire Young Producers, Hofesh Shechter Company and the National Theatre who bring to the stage music, performance, theatre, film and family events. Food trucks will be on hand to fill you up, and an outdoor bar will keep you hydrated.

15 London Craft Beer Festival, Tobacco Dock

Celebrating its 10th birthday, London Craft Beer Festival takes over Tobacco Dock with a showcase of top breweries and a stack of excellent food. More than 100 craft breweries from around the world come together for the festival, which will feature more than 1,000 different brews a alongside a knock-out food line-up from some of London’s favourite restaurants and chefs. Tickets include unlimited beer samples and give you entry for either afternoon or evening sessions.

16 Jurassic World: The Exhibition, Royal Docks

For dinosaur lovers and fans of the blockbuster film series, this is your chance to rub shoulders with your most loved and feared prehistoric reptile. Jurassic World: The Exhibition opens August 25 at ExCel London, on the Elizabeth line. Visitors can roam through the exhibition – which takes up a whooping 20,000 square-feet – and encounter prehistoric animals, including a life-sized Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus and T-Rex, which are also wandering around.

17 Sky Garden’s Ibiza Inspired Summer Party, City 

London’s sky high destination is set to whisk you away to sunnier skies with an Ibiza-inspired party. With stunning views over London’s skyline, music from the Ibiza Live Orchestra and a DJ playing iconic, Balearic-inspired beats all night long, celebrate the arrival of Summer at one of London’s most recognisable locations.

18 Summer Opening of the State Rooms, Buckingham Palace

Back for the first time since the pandemic, Buckingham Palace’s state rooms open up to the public once again for summer. Take a look around the palace’s public rooms where the Queen and the Royal Family receive and entertain official visitors and conduct business as you learn about each ornate room’s history. This year, a special display featuring portraits of Queen Elizabeth and the featured jewels are on display to celebrate Her Majesty’s Jubilee year.

19 Candelight Concerts presents Morricone, Greenwich

Open air concerts, by candlelight, in summer, featuring music by one of the great composers, with Royal Greenwich as your backdrop – Candlelight Concerts present Morricone is not a bad way to spend an evening. August sees musicians perform the works of Morricone – one of the film composing greats who created the score for films such as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly; Once Upon a Time in America and Days of Heaven. Tickets include entry to Royal Museums Greenwich’s Canaletto’s Venice Revisited exhibition.
