Prince Harry and Prince William always enjoyed the same strange snack after school, a special take on a British classic – alongside a dollop of ketchup – the Queen’s former chef has revealed.
Darren McGrady served food to the royals for 11 years and has now opened up about what went down best in The Firm.
Although one might assume that the Royal Family have overly exotic tastes, McGrady revealed that the young princes’ favourite snack was actually the humble sausage roll.
However, Harry and William weren’t popping into Greggs on their way back to the Palace.
McGrady actually had a secret sausage roll recipe, packed with top-quality pork and a special seasoning, as opposed to cheap sausage rolls which he says “are almost vegetarian”, reports MyLondon.
Instead, he opted for 100% ground pork, smoked bacon, sautéed onions and olive oil, before then adding his special Buckingham seasoning with garlic, smoked paprika and juniper.
McGrady did admit to one cheeky cheat – using ready-made puff pastry.
After rolling up, egg washing, scoring, cutting and baking them, they would come out an incredible golden brown ready for Harry and William to enjoy “hot from the oven”.

McGrady said his special sausage rolls could be enjoyed with: “Mashed potatoes, baked beans, and tomato sauce, just how Prince William and Harry would have them when they were home from school.”
Funnily enough, William is also a dab hand at making sausage rolls after spending a week baking them while on work experience at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
In her book Chatsworth: The Housekeeper’s Tale, former housekeeper Christine Robinson describes the incredible story of how William spent time joining the workers and completing jobs around the house in October 2005.
She revealed: “He spent a week working around the estate and made sausage rolls and mince pies.
“Then he spent a week at the house, dressed in overalls, drinking tea and eating fish and chips with the rest of the housemen and joiners.”
