Jubilee party food ideas – Brits’ much-loved recipes from Coronation Chicken to Battenberg Cake


Thousands of Brits will be planning to get together with family and friends to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee this weekend – and no party is complete with a spread of food fit for a Royal.

Whether you’re planning a street party with all the neighbours, a BBQ in the garden or even a classy dinner do with fizz and nibbles, you’ll likely be looking for inspiration. And, as we’re celebrating our monarch’s incredible 70-year reign, it seems only right to bring out the Great British classics.

Prawn cocktail, Coronation Chicken and sausage rolls are some of the savoury treats you might want to prepare for a Jubilee-themed bash. While for dessert, we’ve found recipes for two of the nation’s favourites – Battenberg and Jam Tart.


So get your bunting up, put on your pinny and had to the kitchen – here’s five British party food ideas to get you inspired ahead of the Queen’s Jubilee.

Jubilee Chicken

Coronation Chicken is a classic dish to serve at Royal-themed events, either as a sandwich filler or a dish of its own. Constance Spry, an English food writer, is believed to have come up with the recipe, and prepared it for The Queen’s Coronation banquet in 1953.

It seems only fitting that the classic curry-flavoured chicken dish is served up again nearly 70 years down the line to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. BBC Good Food has come up with a recipe for Jubilee Chicken, a variation of Coronation Chicken, which features the addition of apple, walnuts and pomegranate.

As well as chicken, yoghurt and mayonnaise, you’ll need a range of spices for this dish including turmeric, cumin, ginger, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. Your chicken will need to be roasted in the oven for around 2 hours before you simply mix together the rest of your salad ingredients.

Cheddar and Pickled Onion Sausage Rolls

A good British party platter is simply not complete without some sausage rolls. While it might be tempting to nip down to the shops to get your fill, nothing beats homemade – especially when served warm fresh out of the oven.

Sainsbury’s Magazine has a sausage roll recipe that combines all the flavours of a Great British Ploughman’s, making it perfect for the Queen’s Jubilee. What’s more, the puff pastry can be bought readymade which will save you time in the kitchen.

Other ingredients you’ll need are some Cumberland pork sausages, mature cheddar cheese, pickled onions, some brown sauce and an egg. Once cooked, the rolls will be golden in colour and deliciously flakey.

Prawn Cocktail Lettuce Cups

Prawn Cocktail is another classic appetiser loved by Brits. These elegant lettuce cups would make the perfect canape for a Jubilee party.

Iceland has a simple recipe which will take no time at all to put together – but will add a splash of colour to your Royal spread. Iceberg lettuce, prawns and a simple Marie Rose sauce made up of mayo, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice are the key ingredients.

The addition of avocado, red onion, pepper and a little sprinkle of smoked paprika tops the dish off.

Battenberg Cake

If you really want to impress your friends and family, nailing a classic Battenberg Cake would certainly be one way. The chequerboard effect makes the sweet treat look almost too good to eat.

While the recipe is simple enough to follow, getting your squares to line up perfectly takes patience and precision. But it’s worth it for the finished product.

Delicious Magazine has a step-by-step guide to take you through the process. After baking your two different coloured sponges, you’ll need to assemble your cake with layers of apricot jam in between them before finally wrapping it up in the traditional marzipan coating.

This recipe might not be one for beginners but you’ll be the talk of the party if you can pull it off.

Giant Jam Tart

A simpler dessert option would be a Giant Jam Tart – a supersized version of the classic British bake. Waitrose’s offering even has a Union Flag design on top of it, making it perfect for a pudding centrepiece.

Mini jam tarts are a popular afternoon tea offering, but with such a huge celebration to mark this weekend it makes perfect sense to give the traditional tart a patriotic makeover.

You’re encouraged to make your own pastry and jam for this one, but shop-bought options could be used for anyone short of time. Served hot or cold with a dollop of creme fraiche, this dessert is sure to have every one of your guests licking their lips.
