A recipe book written by a Cullompton man has been declared the best in the world for it’s insight into the art of barbecue.

Marcus Bawdon, of CountryWoodSmoke and UK Barbecue School, won the Gourmand Award for his recipe book Skewered during a virtual ceremony on Sunday June 5. The recipe book represented the UK in the awards and snatched the top spot ahead of entries by Canada and Australia.

The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards are the largest international competitions in the food sector, with entries by 227 countries and regions. It was founded in 1995 by influential Spanish culinary expert Edouard Cointreau and has since been compared to the Oscar’s for it’s celebration of international Food Culture.

Since starting his journey into the world of barbecue 12 years ago, Marcus has grown a passionate barbecue community in the UK through social media and BBQ Magazine. Marcus wrote Skewered in 2021 to inspire more people to pick up the understated cooking technique of barbecuing. Last month, he spoke to DevonLive about his passion for the barbecue community and the untapped potential of the cooking style in Britain.

Marcus said: ” To win an award is dream come true. For me, barbecue is just about having a great time and sharing experiences with others. I hope Skewered gives people the opportunity to try something different and be more confident to explore barbecue further.”

“I’ve always strived to show people what British barbecue can be and this award just goes to show that. People used to look down on British barbecuing, but that’s not the case anymore. If we are winning awards for our recipes then we must be doing something right.”
